Presentation of the PSUC-viu

In 1997, the PSUC dissolved itself when the Iniciativa per Catalunya - Els Verds (Initiative for Catalonia - The Greens), the coalition whose member it was, transformed itself into a single party. Party members who disagreed with the decision have reorganized under the name PSUC-viu, which is currently a member of Esquerra Unida i Alternativa (Unified and Alternative Left), the Catalan branch of IU, as well as the Catalan federation of the Partido Comunista de España (PCE - Communist Party of Spain), although it also operates as an independent party, just like the original PSUC.

Flag of the PSUC-viu

The flag of the PSUC-viu was derived from the flag of the PSUC by adding the word "viu" and a row of small discs beneath the original emblem; the discs are increasing in size from the hoist towards the fly and word "viu".
The emblem may be either white (photo) or yellow (photo). The field is usually darker in case of white emblem, but it is not always the case, and a dark shade of red is sometimes used with the yellow emblem as well. The number of discs is usually seven, but there are sometimes as many as nine (photo).

The PSUC was founded on 23 July 1936, only a few days after the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, as the result of the convergence of four preexisting parties: the Catalan Proletarian Party, the Socialist Union of Catalonia, the catalan branch of the Socialist Worker's Party of Spain and the Communist Party of Catalonia. During the war the PSUC took part in the Government of Catalonia and was banned as result of the defeat of the Republican forces.
During the 1939-1975 regime it acted in clandestinity and as soon as democracy returned to Spain it was legally refounded in 1976.

The flag of the PSUC is red with the party's emblem, either white or yellow (photo.
